ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

Cooks, prepares, presents, and serves food items under the Food Service Director or Building Kitchen Supervisor. Ensures that food is prepared in a manner which is nutritious, safe, properly flavored and in compliance with District, USDA, and accrediting agency standards for quality.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 18 years of age.
  • One to three months related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to read, understand, and speak Basic English to perform essential functions of the job.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence and effectively present information in one-on-one to customers and other employees of the district.
  • Working knowledge of food handling, preparation, production, standard equipment, food safety and sanitation.
  • Employment is on a conditional basis pending completion of a State and National background check.

CERTIFICATES

 

Current Food Handlers Card or ability to obtain one; Valid Driver’s License

 

TYPICAL WORK DUTIES

  • Assists in providing nutritional and attractive meals, salad bars, and al a carte selections to schools as specified.
  • Oversees student workers, enduring that proper safety and sanitation standards are maintained
  • In the case of an absence, may be asked to fulfill all or part of the position of the kitchen supervisor.
  • Cooks and prepares various entrees, fruit, vegetables, sandwiches, and other menu items using standardized recipes.
  • Offers and serves correct portions to comply with district and National School Lunch and Breakfast Program standards.
  • Communicates and coordinates as needed with kitchen supervisor on strategies to accomplish production and maintain quality standards.
  • Assists in maintaining daily production records and accurate counting of food and supplies for inventories.
  • Operates cash register / point of sale device during serving periods as needed.
  • Assists in general cleanup, which may include washing and putting away dishes.
  • Maintains and follows correct safety and sanitation standards at all times.
  • Assist in ordering and receiving of all food and supplies.
  • Cleans and restocks work area throughout the day. Maintains standards for sanitation and cleanliness by following standards for “clean as you go” and scheduled routine cleaning.
  • Transports goods to satellite schools in school vehicle as needed.
  • Assists in maintaining organized storage of dry goods, refrigerated and frozen products.
  • Assist in proper labeling, dating and rotation of product in dry storage, coolers, and freezers.
  • Reports needed maintenance, faulty equipment, or accidents to the kitchen supervisor immediately.
  • Attends in-service and / or safety meetings as required.
  • Works effectively and maintains good working relationships with co-workers, school personnel, administrators, students, parents, and program director.
  • Maintains clean and safe work environment; ability to perform job safely.
  • Maintains daily temperature logs in all areas of storage and food preparation.
  • Wears the prescribed uniform. Maintains a professional appearance at all times.
  • Regular attendance/punctuality.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy in evaluation of all employees.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee is frequently required to walk; sit; use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms using a keyboard and video display terminal.  The employee is frequently required to stand and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and climb stairs.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 15 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

The work environment is in a school that combines standard office equipment (fax, copier, phone, computer, 10-key, etc.) with the standard school setting.  The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate and occasionally high.  May be exposed to bloodborne pathogens.
